Barite properties

Barite is usually white to light gray, but may also be seen in blue, brown or black. Barite has a shell to glassy polish. Type 1 samples of it are seen as stretched orthodontic crystals, but commercial barite is prepared in granular form and crystalline masses.  The specific gravity of this mineral is high and is about 4.3 to 4.6. This property of barite helps to identify it. Barite stiffness has a considerable variation and varies from 2.5 to 3.5, which usually produces different barite regions with varying degrees of stiffness.

Barite formation

Barite is a common and widespread mineral. Typically, it is found as a waste mineral in thermal veins along with ores of silver, lead, copper, cobalt, manganese, antimony, and in veins available in limestone with calcite, or in the form of masses remained in clays covering lime stones, as well as in sandstones with copper ores. It acts in some areas as sandstone cement. Sometimes, it also precipitates from the spa springs.

Is the primary, naturally occurring, barium-based mineral.  Barium, atomic number 56, derives its name from Greek and means heavy.  Barite is also known as baryte, and in Missouri is known as "tiff”.  The primary countries in which commercial deposits of barite are currently found are the Iran,United States, China, India and Morocco.  Barite’s high density and chemical inertness make it an ideal mineral for many applications.
The chemical formula for barite is BaSO4.  It has a high specific gravity of 4.50 g/cm3.  Its Mohs hardness is 3.0 to 3.5.  Barite, which may be found in a variety of colors including yellow, brown, white, blue, gray, or even colorless, typically has a vitreous to pearly luster. 
Barite may be found in conjunction with both metallic and nonmetallic mineral deposits.  To be economically viable for extraction, barite usually needs to be the predominant material in a deposit.  The types of deposits in which it is normally found include vein, residual, and bedded.  Vein and residual deposits are of hydrothermal origin, while bedded deposits are sedimentary.
Major deposits in the United States have been found in Georgia, Missouri, Nevada and Tennessee.  In Canada, the mineral has been mined in the Yukon Territory, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.  In Mexico, barite deposits have been discovered in Hermosillo, Pueblo, Monterrey and Durango.

Applications of barite:

Oil and gas drilling

In deep drilling for oil and gas in a rotary method and in areas where the pressure of gas or liquid is low, for catheterization, a heavy product is required to catheterization preventing removal of materials and controlling its pressure. Due to the proper conditions of barite, it is used in this case. In this case, the barite powder is added to the usual solution of water and clay. Due to the useful properties of this mixture, such neutrality in terms of chemical composition, cleanliness, and relatively cheap price, it is considered very favourable. Generally, about 3.4 of the barite produced annually are consumed in this area. Barite is a vital mineral in the oil and gas drilling industry. According to 1980’s statistic, about 90% of barite produced in Rhina was used in drilling mud. Barite is used for drilling mud due to its high specific gravity, the simplicity of its use during working, neutrality in terms of chemical composition, its softness and suitability in terms of price. The amount of used barite per km of drilling has been reported to be about 429 tonnes.

Preparation of chemicals containing barium:

The second most important use of barite is using it as source for preparation of chemicals containing barium are widely used in various industries. Barium sulfate is used as coating in the paper production and rubber production industries and linoleum materials. Barium chloride is used in leather industry, and weaving. Barium carbonate is also used as glaze and ceramic polishing.  Barium oxides are used in the glass making industry, electric furnaces and metallurgy. Barium hydroxide is commonly used in the purification and preparation of sugar from molasses. Barite is also used as a secondary product in chemical compounds in many cases. 10% of the total produced barite is used for the preparation of barite-containing chemicals.

Crushed barite consumptions

Barite in crushed from is directly used as a coating in rubber production and dye fluidizing. In addition, if the size of crushed barite grains is as large as sand, it can be used in the glass industry. In this case, barite is used as a melting aid to work on glass and creating transparency. Crushed barite is used as cement covering of underwater pipes in the transportation of oil and gas. The reason for the use of barite in this case is its heaviness and neutrality.

Application of barite in ceramic

In glass making industry, it is used as a melting material reducing bubble and it is used in product luminosity and transparency. Barium-containing glasses are more transparent and brighter than lead glass. Advanced ceramics containing barium are used in the electronics industry (condenser, earphone, speakerphone, telephone, and permanent magnet.

Application of barite in fillers

Barite is used in paint, plastic, paper and rubber industries as filler material. Due to its high specific gravity and radioactive absorption property, it is also used in the production of cement blocks. A mixture of rubber, asphalt and 10% barite is used in the construction of stations and runways of the airport. It is also used in pharmaceutical industries, alloy, and radiation protection and so on.

Medical Industry: 
An application where many people have heard of barite is within the medical field.  A high-purity form of barite is used in the gastrointestinal tract where its density prevents x-ray penetration, and thus is visible on an x-ray.  The outline of the gastrointestinal tract thus becomes visible allowing the determination of normal and abnormal anatomy.

 Barite is also used in a wide variety of other applications including plastics, clutch pads, rubber mudflaps, mold release compounds, radiation shielding, television and computer monitors, sound-deadening material in automobiles, traffic cones, brake linings, paint and golf balls.

Most barite produced is used as a weighting agent in drilling muds. These high-density muds are pumped down the drill stem, exit through the cutting bit and return to the surface between the drill stem and the wall of the well. This flow of fluid does two things: 1) it cools the drill bit; and, 2) the high-density barite mud suspends the rock cuttings produced by the drill and carries them up to the surface.

Barite is also used as a pigment in paints and as a weighted filler for paper, cloth and rubber. The paper used to make some playing cards has barite packed between the paper fibers. This gives the paper a very high density that allows the cards to be "dealt" easily to players around a card table. Barite is used as a weighting filler in rubber to make "anti-sail" mudflaps for trucks.

Barite is the primary ore of barium, which is used to make a wide variety of barium compounds. Some of these are used for x-ray shielding. Barite has the ability to block x-ray and gamma-ray emissions. Barite is used to make high-density concrete to block x-ray emissions in hospitals, power plants, and laboratories.

Barite compounds are also used in diagnostic medical tests. If a patient drinks a small cup of liquid that contains a barium powder in a milkshake consistency, the liquid will coat the patient's esophagus. An x-ray of the throat taken immediately after the "barium swallow" will image the soft tissue of the esophagus (which is usually transparent to x-rays) because the barium is opaque to x-rays and blocks their passage. A "barium enema" can be used in a similar way to image the shape of the colon.
